Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she turned an adult because of the impact stress might be able to have on their daughter. Perry admitted that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school. However, she began performing as a means to make friends during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, caused her to move back to California and she returned to work on stage. She and her mother starred on Broadway with her as part of The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared nine times in The Family, an ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. In 2017, she had a minor role on ABC's political thriller Scandal in which her father was the main character. In addition, she played her older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. Despite her family link to the character, she was offered the part through an audition.
